1915 - 2004
A beautiful memorial service was held in Sun City, Arizona on May 23,
2004.
Ellen joined her beloved husband and two sons at rest in Lakeview Cemetery in
Tower, Minnesota during a committal service officiated by her grandson,
Rev. Perry R. Bauer on July 17, 2004 at 11:00AM.
Following the service, many family and friends gathered and reminisced
during a reception at the Fortune Bay Resort on Lake Vermillion.

Ellen Wilhelmenia Laugen was born to Henry and Wilhelmenia
Arola in Soudan, Minnesota on July 31, 1915.
Ellen was baptized on August 20, 1916 and later confirmed at St. Paul’s
Lutheran Church in Soudan.
Ellen and Richard Davis Laugen, Sr. were united in marriage
in Soudan on April 17, 1934. His nickname for her was “Willie.”
Family was the centerpiece of Ellen’s life, and their union was blessed
with four children. After they raised their children and moved to Virginia,
Minnesota, Ellen was a dedicated nurse’s aid at Arrowhead Nursing Home; she
always loved helping others. In
1972, the couple relocated to Phoenix, Arizona to enjoy their retirement years.
She had resided at Plaza del Rio Care Center in Peoria, Arizona since
August 2001.
Ellen was extremely proud of her Finnish heritage and she
continued to speak Finn throughout her life with relatives and friends –
usually over a cup of strong coffee! She
had been a talented vocalist and loved to go out dancing with her husband.
Ellen had a great sense of humor, was always cheerful, and freely
expressed her gratitude for every favor and kindness, large or small.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five
brothers, one sister, and two sons, Lyle Allen Laugen and Richard Laugen, Jr.
Ellen is survived by two daughters: JoAnn Peterson and her
husband Robert of Mesa, Arizona and Kay Marquardt and her husband Charles of Sun
City, Arizona; one
sister, Lila Bubash of Ely, Minnesota; daughter-in-law Joan Laugen of Eveleth,
Minnesota; six grandchildren: Peter Bauer, Perry Bauer, Colleen Bauer, Derek
Bauer, Cynthia Laugen, and Timothy Laugen; and nine great-grandchildren.
Ellen Wilhelmenia Laugen slept peacefully as she returned to the Lord on
Wednesday evening,
May 19, 2004 having reached the age of 88 years, 9 months, and 18
days.
